BRONX, N.Y. - The University of Rhode Island softball team dropped a pair of games to Fordham University Saturday afternoon in Atlantic 10 action at Bahoshy Field. The Rams - who entered the doubleheader having won six of their last seven games - suffered a 9-1 setback in the opener before falling 6-2 in game two. The Rams (7-16, 1-4 A-10) entered `The Empire State' having won six of their last seven games.
Rhody got on the board first in game one on an RBI double by sophomore Melissa Wilson in the top of the first. Fordham answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, led by Jocelyn Dearborn's two-run single. Fordham tacked on two more in the second and four in the fourth as Mary Beth Puccio drove in a pair of runs while Allison Storc also recorded an RBI. Dearborn, meanwhile, finished with three hits and three RBI as the Rams pounded out 13 hits and capitalized on three URI errors.
Senior Jill Anderson took the loss in the opener, allowing 13 hits and nine runs (sox earned) with one walk and one strikeout. Twarowski, meanwhile, allowed just one hit while striking out two.
In the nightcap, Wilson and sophomore MaryBeth Ball each drove in a run for URI, who fell behind 4-0 after two innings and were unable to pull even. Wilson drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to plate the Rams' first run of the afternoon (4-1), but Fordham answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame to extend its least to 6-1. Ball capped the scoring with an RBI single in the seventh.
Twarowski was the catalyst for the Fordham offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Freshman Stacey Stanovich allowed seven hits and six runs (five earned) with three strikeouts in six innings. Beckah Wiggins recorded the win for Fordham, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out five.
The Rams return to action on Tuesday when they return to N.Y. for a pair of games against Stony Brook. Game one is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
