Rhode Island Welcomes Dayton to Town for Three Games

KINGSTON, R.I. – The softball season has reached its midpoint as Rhode Island welcomes Dayton to the URI Softball Complex for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader Friday at 12 p.m.

Due to Easter Sunday, the teams moved their series up a day. There will be two games Friday afternoon, followed by a single game on Saturday at 12 p.m.

Friday's doubleheader will stream on ESPN+ (links below). On Saturday, the URI women's lacrosse match against Davidson will be streamed.

RHODE ISLAND VS. DAYTON - SERIES NOTES 
  • Dayton leads the all-time series, 41-23-1.
  • This is the second season in a row the Flyers will visit the URI Softball Complex.
  • Last season, Dayton took two of three games between the schools. Dayton took the first game 9-5 and the third game 8-1. Rhody won the middle game of the series 2-1.
  • Dayton is playing a non-conference game at Providence on Thursday.
  • Flyers pitcher Izzy Kemp is the current Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week, an honor she won for the fourth time this season. 
  • Kemp was 3-0 last week with a 1.05 ERA and 32 strikeouts over 20.0 innings of work in four appearances. 
  • For the season, she is 9-3 with two saves and a 1.55 ERA and 151 strikeouts in 85.2 innings of work.
  • Kemp is third in the nation in strikeouts per seven innings with 12.3.
  • Dayton's Kirnan Bailey is the toughest player in the Atlantic 10 to strike out, fanning once every 44 at bats.
  • Bailey also is 25-for-26 on stolen base attempts this season.
  • The Flyers bat .274 as a team, with Deirdre Flaherty hitting a team-best .360.

VALE-CRUZ PICKS UP THREE STRAIGHT WINS

  • Junior Avery Vale-Cruz earned wins in each of her last three appearances.
  • She improved to 6-3 with 4.0 innings of scoreless relief at Yale Tuesday.
  • Vale-Cruz pitched all 8.0 innings in the team's 6-4 win at Saint Louis on Saturday.
  • The next day, she pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief with two more strikeouts in a 3-2 win.
  • Vale-Cruz has accounted for six of the team's eight wins in the circle.
  • She is 4-1 with 24 strikeouts over 25.2 innings of work over her last six appearances.

ZAWISTOWSKI DELIVERING AT THE PLATE

  • Senior Becca Zawistowski has an active four-game hitting streak in which she is batting .462 (6-for-13). Zawistowski has her batting average up to .317.
  • She is second on the team in hits (19), walks (9) and runs batted in (8).
  • After starting 88 games combined as a freshman and sophomore, Zawistowski played just 12 games last season before suffering a season-ending injury.
  • She has started 21 of the team's 23 games this season, shifting between first base and designated player.
