STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Rhode Island softball team lost both games of Tuesday afternoon's non-conference doubleheader against Stony Brook University Tuesday at the Stony Brook Softball Field. The Rams (7-18) dropped game one 9-0 and suffered a 9-7 loss (eight innings) in game two.
Trailing 2-0 in the third inning of game two, URI senior Shelly Peterson (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) poked a two-out single and came around to score on a single by sophomore Melissa Wilson (Longview, Wash.) to cut the deficit to 2-1. Stony Brook (11-9-1) answered back with three in the bottom half of the inning and one in the fourth to grab a 6-1 lead.
The Rhode Island bats came alive for the first time all afternoon in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs to take a 7-6 lead. Sophomore Darci Borden (Elma, Wash.) led off with a double and scored the Rams second run of the afternoon on a fielder's choice by junior Stefani Poedubicky (Wrightstown, N.J.). After freshman Amie Archambault (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored on a wild pitch, senior Christine Gentile (West Babylon, N.Y.) scored on another fielder's choice to make it 6-3. Senior Danielle Quimby (Lake Forest, Calif.) plated another run on a fielders choice, and junior Rachel Rosenwasser (Montgomery, N.Y.) ripped an RBI single to plate two runs (one on an error), giving the Rams' their first lead of the day.
Stony Brook's Colleen Ryan tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh, and after a one-out walk to Ashley Westphal in the eighth, Kelly Oberto drilled a walk-off two-run home run to give the Seawolves a 9-7 win.
Freshman Stacey Stanovich (Northbridge, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams as she allowed 13 hits and nine runs (eight earned) in 7.1 innings of work. Alyssa Struzenberg - who picked up the win in game one - scatted two hits over three innings while striking out four.
Earlier in the day, the Rams and Seawolves were locked in a scoreless game until the bottom of the fifth when Stony Brook put a `7' spot on the board. Crista Cerrone led off the inning with a home run to center field to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead. Following a walk and a sac bunt, Kelsi Fanelli belted a two-run home run to extend the lead to 3-0. Molly Kestranek, Kelly Oberto, and Colleen Ryan each laced RBI singles later in the inning, and an RBI fielder's choice by Cerrone brought home the seventh run of the inning. In the sixth, Marissa Fleury's two-run shot capped the scoring at 9-0 and ended the game.
Senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) started for URI and went five innings, allowing 11 hits and nine runs while striking out five. Alyssa Struzenberg picked up the win for Stony Brook as she held the Rams to one hit while striking out 10.
The Rams return to action on Friday when they host Charlotte at 3 p.m.
