Rams Take Opener From Charlotte, 4-2

KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore Darci Borden (Elma, Wash.) belted a two-run home run in the fifth inning to lead the University of Rhode Island to a 4-2 win over Charlotte in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference action at the URI Softball Field.

With the score tied at two entering the fifth, senior Christine Gentile (West Babylon, N.Y.) opened the frame with a single to left field. Following a strikeout by senior Shelly Petersen (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Borden stepped in and launched her fourth home run of the season over the left field fence to put URI in front, 4-2.

The Rams (8-18, 2-3 A-10) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their half of the first inning. Following a two-out walk to sophomore Melissa Wilson (Longview, Wash.) and a wind-blown single by classmate Leah DiBussolo (East Norriton, Pa.), junior Stefani Poedubicky (Wrightstown, N.J.) drilled a grounder to short that was mishandled by Charlotte SS Sierra Brooks, allowing both runners to score.

Charlotte (17-17, 2-1 A-10) tied the game with a pair of runs in the third inning. Serena Smith opened the inning with a single and came around to score on a groundout by Jaime West. Brooks tied the game later in the inning when she crossed home plate following a wild pitch.

Senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) allowed five hits and two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. Katy Hackett started for the 49ers and worked six innings, allowing five hits and four runs (two earned) with four strikeouts.

The Rams and 49ers were slated to begin game two of their twin-bill at 2 p.m.
