Santa Clara Shuts Down Rams, 5-1

FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore Melissa Wilson (Longview, Wash.) had an RBI double in the University of Rhode Island's 5-1 loss to Santa Clara in non-conference softball action Thursday afternoon at the Fresno State Invitational.

Santa Clara jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Amanda Edmonson doubled home Noelani Ho'Iop'i. In the fourth, the Broncos tacked on three runs to stretch the lead to 4-0 as Jackie Morales laced a two-out, bases-clearing double that plated three runs.

The Rams got a run back in the fifth to make it 4-1. Sophomore Darci Borden (Elma, Wash.) led off with a single, stole second, and came home on Wilson's double. Santa Clara capped the scoring with a run in the seventh.

Freshman Stacey Stanovich (Northbridge, Mass.) started for the Rams (1-5) and allowed nine hits and five runs (four earned) in seven innings of work. Morales, meanwhile, picked up her second win of the season in the circle, allowing seven hits and one earned run over seven innings while striking out six.

The Rams were slated to meet DePaul later in the afternoon at 4 p.m. PT.
