KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore Melissa Wilson (Longview, Wash.) belted a two-run home run and drove in four runs to leas the University of Rhode Island softball team to an 8-4 win over Dayton in Atlantic 10 softball action Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the URI Softball Field.
Senior Danielle Quimby (Lake Forest, Calif.) also drove in a pair of runs for the Rams (14-28, 4-12 A-10), who snapped a three-game losing skid. The loss drops the Flyers to 19-22 (6-8 A-10).
The Flyers opened the scoring in the first on an RBI single by Blair Crabtree, but the Rams answered back with five runs of their own in their half of the inning to take a 5-1 lead. Wilson drove in the first two runs with a double to left, and Quimby followed with a single to center to plate another. Quimby later scored on a fielders choice, and sophomore Darci Borden (Elma. Wash.) drew an bases-loaded walk to bring home junior Alyse Fram (Pawtucket, R.I.) to cap the inning.
In the second, URI stretched its lead to 6-1 on an RBI single by Quimby. Crabtree struck again for the Flyers in the fourth, lacing a three-run double that cut the Rams' lead to 6-4. Wilson's first home run of the season over the left field wall in the bottom half of the inning gave Rhode Island a four-run lead at 8-4, which it would not relinquish.
Senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) bounced back from a rough outing on Friday to earn her ninth win of the season for URI. She allowed nine hits and four runs (three earned) in seven innings of work, striking out three. Eva Rappe suffered the loss for the Flyers, allowing three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings before being relieved by Erin LaFayette.
The Rams return to action tomorrow when they travel to Connecticut for a doubleheader against Fairfield. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
