DiBussolo Drives in Two as Rams Lose DH at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The University of Rhode Island softball team suffered a pair of losses at Fairfield University Sunday afternoon at Alumni Softball Field. The Rams (14-30) dropped game one 4-1 and game two 10-2.

Fairfield scored twice in the first inning of game one on an RBI triple by Riannon Thomas and an RBI single by Jenna DiBernardo. URI sophomore Leah DiBussolo (East Norriton, Pa.) drove in senior Shelly Petersen (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth, but the Stags (18-21-1) answered with a run in their half of the fifth and another in the sixth to seal the win.

Freshman Stacey Stanovich (Northbridge, Mass.) took the loss for URI in game one, allowing nine hits and four runs over six innings. Danielle Iovino earned her first win of the season for Fairfield as she allowed five hits and one run over five innings after relieving Kelli Painter in the third.

The Rams opened the scoring in game two on a sac fly by sophomore Melissa Wilson (Longview, Wash.) that plated Petersen. The Stags picked up three runs of their own in their half of the inning as Thomas, Kristina Lingo, and Erin Frank each drove in runs.

Fairfield went ahead for good in the third, scoring twice to take a 5-2 lead. The Stags would add three more in the fourth and two in the sixth, finishing with 11 hits. Lingo and Frank each finished with three RBI for Fairfield, while URI's other run came in the fifth on an RBI groundout by DiBussolo.

Senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) allowed 11 hits and 10 runs (eight earned) in 5.2 innings of work for the Rams while Sarah Minice and Jen Gilbert each tossed three innings for Fairfield. The duo held the Rams to five hits and one run.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Providence in a doubleheader. Game one is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
