The Friars (22-18-2) jumped all over the Rams in game one, breaking a 1-1 tie with six runs in the second and another sixth in the fifth. The big blow came off the bat of Christy Becker, who belted a three-run home run in the second. She finished the game with five RBI while Mary Rose Sheehy drove in three and Gina Rossi drove in a pair. Sophomore Leah DiBussolo (East Norriton, Pa.) drove in the Rams' only run.
Senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) took the loss in game one, allowing 14 hits and 14 runs (13 earned) in five innings of work to fall to 9-18 on the season. She walked four and struck out four. In the nightcap, the Rams broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the third. DiBussolo drove in two runners with a triple that hit off the top of the center field wall, and she came around to score on a single by classmate Melissa Wilson (Longview, Wash.).
The Friars chipped away at the lead, scoring one in the fourth and another in the sixth to make it a 3-2 contest. With two outs in the seventh, Becker and Rossi laced back-to-back singles, and Justine Stratton followed with a double to score both runners and give the Friars a 4-3 lead. The Rams got the tying run on base with two outs in their half of the inning, but were unable to get the equalizer.
Kathryn Sullivan improved to 2-1 with the win for Providence as she scattered four hits over 4.1 innings of relief while striking out three. Freshman Stacey Stanovich (Northbridge, Mass.) fell to 5-14 with the loss, allowing 11 hits and four runs (three earned) with two strikeouts in seven innings.
