WASHINGTON, D.C. - The University of Rhode Island softball team suffered a pair of losses at the hands of George Washington University Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 action at the Mount Vernon Complex. The Rams (10-22, 2-6 A-10) dropped game one 2-0 before losing game two 2-1.
George Washington broke a scoreless tie in the opener in the fifth to grab a 1-0 lead. Amanda Gabriel opened the inning with a double to left and came around to score when Chrysanthi Halkiotis followed with a double to left. The Colonials (7-16, 3-5 A-10) added a run in the sixth when Tori Sensi roped a leadoff double and scored on a single by Amanda Holst to make it 2-0.
Gabriel picked up her fifth win of the season for GW in game one as she held the Rams to two hits while striking out three. Senior Jill Anderson (Cohoes, N.Y.) worked six innings for the Rams, allowing seven hits and two runs with one strikeout.
The Rams opened the scoring in the second game when sophomore Darci Borden (Elma, Wash.) opened the game with a double and scored on a sac fly by classmate Melissa Wilson (Longview, Wash). The Colonials tied the game in their half of the frame on an RBI single by Sensi and scored the eventual winning run in the third when Halkiotis led off with a single and scored on a wild pitch.
Gabriel improved to 6-10 with a win in game two. She worked seven innings and allowed five hits and one run while striking out 12. Freshman Stacey Stanovich (Northbridge, Mass.) suffered the loss for URI, allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Brown. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
