STORRS, Conn. - The Rhode Island baseball team suffered an 11-7 loss to Connecticut, Tuesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field. Freshman
Pete Mastors (Narragansett, R.I.) went 2-for-3 with a triple, a run and an RBI while senior
Shaun Hagey (Ephrata, Pa.) added a double and three runs.
URI led 3-0 after an inning and a half as sophomore Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.) reached on a first-inning bunt single and advanced to third on Hagey's double down the left field line before both runners crossed then the plate on Zaneski's double to right field. The following inning, freshman Mastors' RBI triple scored Robert Noe (Lynnfield, Mass.), who had reached first on a two-out walk.
UConn's Doug Elliott got the Huskies within one with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second but back-to-back wild pitches in the top of the third sent Hagey across the plate to put Rhody back on top, 4-2.
A three-run fourth inning gave UConn a 5-4 advantage before fifth-inning runs by Palmer, Hagey and Zaneski put the Rams back up, 7-5.
The lead was short lived though, as UConn plated one in the bottom of the inning and tacked on four more in the sixth and another in the seventh for the 11-7 win.
Sophomore reliever Mark Fraser (Nashua, N.H.) was charged with the loss, giving up the tying and go-ahead runs in the sixth inning, while UConn's Mike Hashem earned the win.
The Rams are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they return to Bill Beck Field to host Siena at 3 p.m.
