Volleyball Splits in Day One at Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Rhode Island volleyball team split a pair of matches in Day One at the Quinnipiac Invitational in Hamden, Conn.

Rhody fell to Towson (25-21, 16-25, 25-20, 25-22) in the tournament opener. Junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) recorded a match-best 13 kills while senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) turned in a match-high 24 digs.

In their second match of the day, the Rams swept Morgan State (25-8, 25-16, 25-18). Welsh and sophomore Lauren McIntosh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) paced URI with eight kills each while Doino registered a match-high 14 digs. Sophomore Lindsay Lytle (Sebastopol, Calif.) led all players with 21 assists.

The Rams are back in action tomorrow when they take on Atlantic 10 rival Fordham - in a non-conference match - at 9 a.m. before squaring off against host Quinnipiac at 2 p.m.
