HAMDEN, Conn. - The Rhode Island volleyball
team split a pair of matches in the final day of the Quinnipiac
Invitational. The Rams lost to Fordham (3-1) and beat Quinnipiac
(3-1) to finish the two-day tournament with a 2-2 mark.
For their efforts over the course of the weekend, junior Caitlyn Welsh
(Narraganestt, R.I.) and sophomore Lindsay Lytle
(Sebastopol, Calif) both were named to the All-Tournament team.
In the first match of the day, the Rams dropped a 3-1 (26-24,
25-18, 19-25, 25-17) decision to Fordham. Welsh led the way
offensively for the Rams as she totaled 11 kills. Sophomore Lauren
McIntosh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also chipped in offensively
with nine kills.
On the defensive side of the net, three players posted
double-figures in digs. Senior Peggy Doino (Deer
Park, N.Y.) paced the Rams with 18 digs. Welsh and Lytle also
tallied 14 and 10 digs, respectively. Lytle also had a match high
36 assists.
In the second match of the day, URI scored a 3-1 (25-19, 25-11,
17-25, 25-9) triumph over host Quinnipiac. The Rams limited the
Bobcats to an attack percentage of just .054.
Freshman Stacey Yohannes
(Penfield, N.Y.) led URI defensively with a match-high 20 digs.
Yohannes was one of four Rams to post double figures in digs.
Offensively for the Rams, Welsh led the way with 13 kills and
was one of three URI players to reach double figures in kills.
Sophomore Kayla
Newberg (Deer Park, Wash.) and freshman Kayla Wilson (Santa
Monica, Calif.) also tallied 10 kills apiece.
URI returns to Kingston Sept 4-6 to compete in the Art
Carmichael Invitational where they will face off against Stony
Brook (Sept. 4), South Carolina (Sept. 5) and Boston College (Sept.
6).
