PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (6-7 overall; 0-1 Atlantic 10) dropped its conference opener at La Salle, 3-2 on Friday.
Four URI players tallied double-digit kill totals against La Salle with sophomore Kayla Newberg (Deer Park, Wash.) leading the way with 14 terminations.
Fellow sophomore Lauren McIntosh (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded 13 kills, while junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) and freshman Kayla Wilson (Santa Monica, Calif.) each notched 12 kills.
Welsh also led the team defensively as she totaled a season-high 22 digs to record her seventh double-double on the year. The Rhode Island native's previous season-high total came against New Hampshire back on Sept. 12, where she notched 16 digs.
Senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) also chipped in with 16 digs. This season, Doino has recorded 15-or-more digs in seven of her 13 matches this season.
The Rams dropped the first two games of the match, losing 25-20 and 25-22, respectively. In game three, Rhode Island responded with a 25-16 triumph as it held the Explorers to just -.026 hitting.
URI forced a decisive fifth game after it downed La Salle 25-21 in game four, but the Explorers captured game five 15-12 and outhit URI .308-.115 to claim the match.
Rhode Island returns to action on Saturday as its travels to Temple for a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
