Volleyball Sweeps Stony Brook in Home Opener

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island volleyball team improved to 3-2 on the year as it swept Stony Brook 3-0 on Thursday night to open the home portion of its 2008 schedule in the first day of the Art Carmichael Invitational.

The Rams' 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-18) sweep of the Seawolves gave URI its second straight win and its third in the last four matches.

Freshman Stacey Yohannes (Penfield, N.Y.) and junior Caitlyn Welsh (Narragansett, R.I.) led the way offensively for the Rams as they combined for 17 kills. Yohannes paced the squad with nine kills, while Welsh registered eight terminations.

Senior Peggy Doino (Deer Park, N.Y.) paced URI defensively as she collected a match-high 11 digs.

The Rams return to action tomorrow night against South Carolina at 7:00 p.m.
