Rhody Takes Down Central Connecticut

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (7-13; 1-7 Atlantic 10) defeated Central Connecticut State 3-1 at home Wednesday night at Keaney Gymnasium.

Rhody's win over CCSU marked the third straight season it had defeated the Blue Devils. In addition, URI improved its mark to 6-6 against non-conference foes this season.

Four URI players recorded 10-or-more kills. Junior Kayla Newberg totaled a match-high 15 kills to lead the way offensively for the Rams. Teammates Ashley Tennant (11), Lauren McIntosh (10) and Rachel Zarazan (10) all reached double-digit kill totals.

Tennant's 11 kill performance was a career-high, while McIntosh's 10 terminations marked the third straight match in which she has recorded 10-or-more kills.

Defensively for the Rams, Caitlyn Welsh led the way with 17 digs.

URI dropped the first set 25-23. CCSU outhit the Rams .414-.312. Rhody responded with three straight set victories as it won 25-19 (game two), 25-20 (game three) and 25-16 (game four) to claim the match.

Rhody steps back into conference play as it heads to Fordham on Saturday. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
