DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Keith Cothran led all scorers with 19 points as Rhode Island improved to 4-0, beating Davidson 75-65 on Saturday afternoon.
Cothran was 7-11 from the floor (2-4 3FG) grabbing two rebounds and registering two steals in 30 minutes of play.
Both teams got off had a hot shooting hand to start the game, combining to knock down 6-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Rams and Wildcats (1-5) traded baskets and leads through the first 7:19 of the game, before a Stevie Mejia jumper on the elbow gave Rhody the lead for good.
The Runnin' Rams led by as many as eight points in the half, after a Cothran layup with 8:06 left made it 27-19. Davidson would cut it to one (29-28) but Rhody closed the half out strong. Over the last three minutes of the half, the Rams offense went on an 8-2 push, while the defense forced three turnovers.
URI led 37-30 at the break, forcing 11 turnovers and holding Davidson to 35.5% shooting from the floor.
In the second half, a Davidson 3-pointer with 16:35 to play made it 39-36, but that would be as close as the home team would get. Rhody would start a 15-5 run over the next 6:46, started by back-to-back 3-pointers from Akeem Richmond and capped by the first of two traditional 3-point plays by Will Martell. The 7-footer converted the free throw, making it 54-41 with 9:49 to go. Rhode Island would lead by as many as 16 points down the stretch.
Richmond was 4-of-10 from the floor, including 3-of-7 from outside, while Lamonte Ulmer added 12 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals. Will Martell and Marquis Jones each had eight, while Orion Outerbridge added seven rebounds off the bench for URI.
The Rams held Davidson to just 38.9% from the floor, forcing 18 turnovers while recording 12 steals.
