RALEIGH, N.C. - The Rhode Island baseball team fell to Santa Clara, 10-1, in Day Two action at the Summit Hospitality Invitational hosted by NC State. Freshman
Mike LeBel (Quincy Mass.) was 3-for-4 in the loss while sophomore
Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, R.I.) recorded a pair of hits.
Santa Clara (2-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second but Rhody cut the Broncos' advantage in half an inning later when freshman Milan Adams (Exeter, R.I.) led off with a single to left and advanced to third on an outfield single by LeBel. Adams then crossed the plate on an RBI ground-out by sophomore Kenny Burns (Shelton, Conn.) to make the score 2-1.
Rhody (1-1) had loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but an inning-ending fielder's choice play sent the Rams back out on the field still trailing by a run.
Santa Clara then plated four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to put the game out of reach for the Rams.
Junior starter Nick Greenwood (Southington, Conn.) was charged with the loss, giving up five hits and three runs with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Sophomore Chris Pickering (Lincoln, R.I.) was responsible for three Santa Clara runs while classmate Ken Graveline (Prospect, Conn.) gave up the Broncos' last four. Freshmen Anthony Pisani (Revere, Mass.), Sam VandenHeuvel (Chandler, Ariz.), and Ryan O'Neill (Dumont, N.J.) combined to close out the game with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief for the Rams.
Thain Simon took the win for the Broncos.
Rhody returns to action on Sunday with it faces Xavier in a non-conference matchup at 11 a.m.
