ARLINGTON, Va. - Freshman
Mike LeBel (Quincy, Mass.) doubled twice and sparked a ninth-inning comeback that tied the game, but George Washington scored in the bottom of the frame to defeat the Rhode Island baseball team, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Barcroft Park.
With the Rams (11-6) trailing 3-1 heading into the final inning, LeBel sent a one-out double to right field and came around to score on a base hit to right by sophomore pinch hitter Pete Mastors (Narragansett, R.I.). Mastors then advanced to second on a ground-out and tied things up at 3-3 on an RBI-single by junior Oliver Palmer (North Kingstown, R.I.).
The Colonials (10-12) would then intentionally walk senior Dan Rhault (Lincoln, R.I.) before an error by GW second baseman Bryan Hwang put sophomore Tom Coulombe (Lincoln, R.I.) on first to load the bases for junior Rob DeVeney (Marlton, N.J.). DeVeney, however, flied out to right to end the inning.
George Washington went on to score the game winner in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Ryan Thomas.
Rhody's first run of the game had come in the second inning when LeBel's two-out double plated sophomore Jeff Cammans (Jamestown, R.I.) who had doubled to right center.
Sophomore reliever Gardner Leaver (Montauk, N.Y.) was charged with the loss, having allowed five hits and one run in two and a third innings. Junior starter Nick Greenwood (Southington, Conn.) - who was responsible for GW's first three runs - struck out five batters in six innings. Ryan LaPointe earned the win for the Colonials
The two teams return to Barcroft field for a noon-time game on Sunday afternoon.
