Rhody Concludes Play at Boston College Tournament

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Rhode Island volleyball team (5-6) split a pair of matches on Saturday as it defeated Connecticut (3-0) in the first match, but dropped its second contest to host Boston College (3-1).

Rhody made quick work of UConn as it posted it second sweep of an opponent in its last third match.

Sophomore Kayla Wilson and senior Caitlyn Welsh combined for 25 kills (Wilson-13; Welsh-12).

Welsh also notched 10 digs to record her seventh straight double-double. Against Boston College in the afternoon match, Welsh posted 19 digs to notch her eight straight double-double.

As a team, URI outhit UConn .275-.122.

In the second match against Boston College, Rhody dropped the first two sets, falling 25-20 and 25-17. In the third set, Rhody cut the Eagles' lead in half, but BC responded with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth set to claim the match.

Junior Lauren McIntosh led the team offensively as she totaled 15 kills. Welsh and junior Kayla Newberg also posted double-digit kills totals, finishing with 14 and 11 terminations, respectively.

McIntosh and Wilson were both selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Rhode Island returns to action at 7:00 p.m. on Sept. 26 against Saint Louis.
