Baseball Shut Down at Mississippi State, 9-0

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Rhode Island senior Oliver Palmer went 2-for-4 with two assists in the field as the Rhode Island baseball team was shut out by Mississippi State, 9-0, Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. URI stranded seven base runners in the loss.

The Bulldogs (2-0) went up 1-0 in the first inning on a solo shot by Connor Powers before doubling their lead an inning later when Jet Butler scored on on a sacrifice fly by Nick Vickerson.

MSU built on its lead with a six-run third inning and added one more in the eighth to seal the 9-0 victory.

Chris Stratton earned the win for the Bulldogs, allowing just four hits in six innings on the mound. Rhody junior Chris Pickering was charged with the loss after giving up four runs on three hits and two walks over the opening two innings.

Junior Tom Coulombe and redshirt sophomores Adam Derner and Dan Haverstick were the only other Rams to record hits for Rhode Island, which drops to 0-2 on the season.

The Rams are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they return to Dudy Noble field to close out the three-game series with MSU. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
