Feb. 26, 2010

Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Sophomore Mike LeBel had a pair of hits in the Rhode Island baseball team's 13-0 non-conference loss to top-ranked Virginia on Friday evening at Davenport Field.

The Rams (0-4) posted five hits but were unable to push any runs across the plate. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, scored three times in the second inning and never looked back.

Phil Gosselin, Dan Grovatt, Steven Proscia and Franco Valdes each finished with two hits for UVa, which totaled 15 - compared to five by the Rams.

Rhody's best chance at getting on the board came in the top of the eighth with junior Jeff Cammans and redshirt sophomore Rob Noe led off with back-to-back singles but UVa reliever Chad O'Connor struck out the next three batters to end the threat.

Senior Tim Boyce started for URI and pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and six runs while striking out six and walking two. Danny Hultzen - who got the win for Virginia (4-1) - struck out 12 batters and allowed just two hits over seven scoreless innings.

The Rams return to action next Saturday, March 15, when they face Wagner at the Rebel Spring Games at 1 p.m.

The Rams return to Davenport Field tomorrow afternoon for game two of the three-game series with the Cavaliers. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
