WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Rhode Island baseball team suffered a 10-5 setback to Yale, Tuesday night in Winter Haven, Fla. Junior
Tom Coulombe recorded three hits in the loss, which dropped Rhody to 2-8. Yale, meanwhile, improved to 4-0.
The Rams opened up a 2-0 lead over the first two innings as Coulombe's two-out single plated senior Oliver Palmer in the first before senior Rob DeVeney crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the top of the second.
The Bulldogs, however, responded with six unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-2 lead.
Coulombe got things started in the top of the fourth, singling to left and then advancing to third on junior Evan Laude's double to right center. A sac-fly by Deveney then advanced both runners before sophomore Milan Adams' 4-3 ground out sent Laude across the plate, making the score 6-4. Redshirt sophomore Dan Haverstick would score Rhody's final run of the inning, sending a two-out double to left center before coming home on an RBI single by junior Kenny Burns.
That was as close as the Rams would get though as Yale came back with three more runs in the bottom of the frame before tacking on one more in the bottom of the eighth for the 10-5 victory.
Junior starter Gardner Leaver was charged with the loss, giving up seven hits and nine runs (three earned) over 3.2 innings of work. Redshirt freshman reliever Rob Curran then came on and tossed 3.1 scoreless innings of relief. Yale's Vinny Lally took the win for the Bulldogs.
