AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Rhode Island baseball team came up short in a 4-3 loss to Miami (Ohio) on Thursday afternoon. The game was called after six complete innings due to torrential downpours.
The loss drops Rhody to 3-9 while Miami improves to 5-7.
The RedHawks held onto a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings before URI got on the board in the bottom of the third when junior Evan Laude doubled to left and then came around to score on an RBI single by senior Rob DeVeney.
The following inning, junior Tom Coulombe got the Rams within one (3-2) win a solo shot over the left center fence.
Miami added one more in the top of the fifth but Rhode Island came back again as senior Zoey Angulo's two-out single through the left side plated junior Kenny Burns and made it a 4-3 game.
The RedHawks pushed it to 5-3 in the top of the seventh, but the run was not counted because game was called before Rhody was able to bat in the bottom of the frame. Due to NCAA ruling, a game shall be deemed a regulation game if called by the umpire at any time after five innings have been completed, and the score shall be that of the last equal inning played.
Despite striking out eight batters over four innings of work, senior starter Tim Boyce was charged with the loss. Miami's Tyler Melling earned the win.
The Rams return to action on Friday, March 19 when they open up a three-game series at UNC Wilmington.
