Rhode Island Edges Sacred Heart, 11-10

March 9, 2010

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Rhode Island junior Tom Coulombe went 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBI as the Rams downed Sacred Heart, 11-10, on Monday night in Winter Haven, Fla.

Coulombe was one of eight Rams to reach base multiple times on the night as URI slugged out 20 hits, compared to 11 by the Pioneers.

Junior Dan Johnson picked up the win on the mound - his first as a Ram - while SHU's Mike Olszyk was charged with the loss.

Trailing 4-3 after five innings, the Pioneers used a four-run sixth to move ahead 7-4. However, the Rams came back and cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the frame after junior Kyle Borden drew a bases-loaded walk to score senior Rob DeVeney and Coulombe plated sophomore Mike LeBel on a single up the middle.

DeVeney would then tie things up the following inning when he doubled to right, stole third and then scored on a throwing error by SHU catcher Jeff Heppner.

A lead-off triple by Mike Drowne and a sac-fly by Robert Griffith put the Pioneers back in front, 8-7, in the top of the eighth but a Rhody three spot in the bottom of the inning moved the Rams back on top 10-8.

Sacred Heart continued to battle, coming back and evening the score at 10 apiece but a bases-loaded single up the middle by junior Kenny Burns was all the Rams needed to secure the win.

The victory improves URI to 2-7 while Sacred Heart drops to 2-4.

Rhody is back in action on Tuesday evening when it faces Yale at 4:30 p.m.
