KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island baseball team dropped a 13-1 decision to Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
Senior Zoey Angulo scored Rhody's lone run and was the only Ram to reach base more than once with a 2-for-2 day at the plate. Angulo finished the three-game series with six hits in nine at-bats.
As a team, UMass strung together 13 hits on the day, compared to Rhode Island's nine. The Rams also committed four errors in the field.
UMass' Bryan Leigh earned the win on the mound as he struck out three and walked none in his second complete game of the season. Rhode Island sophomore Anthony Pisani took the loss for the Rams, giving up three runs (two earned) over the first two and a third innings.
The Minutemen (7-19, 5-7) got an early start, putting a run on the board after recording three hits in first inning.
The Rams (17-16, 7-5) evened it up at 1-1 in bottom of the second as Angulo led off with a single through the right side, advanced to second on senior Rob DeVeney's sacrifice bunt and came around to score on redshirt sophomore Dan Haverstick's single down the right field line.
From there, URI was unable to get more than the minimum three batters to the plate in each of the next five innings. Meanwhile, UMass added four runs in the third, three in the fifth and five in the seventh to take a 13-1 lead and put the game out of reach after seven complete innings.
Matt Gedman led the Minutemen with three runs on three hits while also driving in four runs on a seventh-inning grand slam. Brian Baudinet finished with a game-best five RBI for UMass.
Rhode Island returns to action with a pair of mid-week games - at Sacred Heart on Tuesday and at UConn on Wednesday - before returning home to host a Xavier in a three-game Atlantic 10 series, next weekend.
