BRONX, N.Y. - The Rhode Island baseball team was defeated by Fordham, 13-2, on Friday afternoon at Houlihan Park. Senior
Luis Chacon led the Rams with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, scoring once and driving in URI's other run.
As a team, Rhode Island combined for just five hits while Fordham finished with 17. The Rams also struggled defensively, committing six errors in the loss - their most in a single game since March 21, 2008 (nine, vs. Temple).
Each of Fordham's starters recorded at least one hit on the afternoon with Ryan Lee, Mike Mobbs, Chris Walker ad Brian Kownacki belting three apiece. Mobbs also drove in a game-high four runs while Walked recorded three RBI.
Rhody trailed 3-0 before getting on the board in the top of the sixth. Fordham went on to score ten more runs in their next three trips to the plate, making it a 13-1 game before Chacon scored on an RBI single by senior Oliver Palmer in the top of the eighth.
Junior starter Ken Graveline took the loss for Rhode Island, giving up four hits and two earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. Of Rhody's four relievers, freshman Sam Cooke was the lone Ram to hold Fordham scoreless as he allowed just one hit in the bottom of the eighth.
Fordham starter Brian Pendergast gave up just two Rhode Island hits over seven innings to pick up the win.
The loss drops URI to 10-13 (3-2) on the season while Fordham improves to 8-17 (3-2).
URI returns to Davenport field to close out the three-game series with Fordham, tomorrow at 1 p.m.
