Baseball Posts 23-2 Win at Sacred Heart

April 20, 2010

Box Score

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Rhode Island baseball team combined for 19 hits in a 23-2 rout of Sacred Heart, Tuesday afternoon at Harbor Yard. The 23 runs are a season-high for the Rams, who have now recorded double-digit runs in three of their last six games.

Junior Kyle Borden reached base in each of his six trips to the plate, going 3-for-3 with three walks, four runs and two RBI. Sophomore Mike LeBel also scored four times on three hits while junior Evan Laude and senior Oliver Palmer each drove in four runs and scored twice. Laude finished with three hits - including a pair of doubles - and two walks.

Junior Tom Coulombe went 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI while senior Rob DeVeney, sophomore Milan Adams and redshirt sophomore Adam Derner each drove in three runs. Two of Adams' RBI - and all three of Derner's - were recorded on home runs.

Senior Dan Rossignol earned the win on the hill for the Rams, retiring 17 consecutive batters from the first to sixth inning. The Rhody righty gave up just two hits over six innings to earn his team-leading seventh win of the season. Freshman John Kashmanian came on in the bottom of the seventh and gave up just three hits the rest of the way. Despite Rhode Island's 21-run margin of victory, Kashmanian met the criteria needed to earn his first career save.

The Rams (18-16) came out and plated four runs in the top of the first inning, but SHU (14-20) scored two of its own to even things up in the bottom of the frame.

That would be as close as it would get though as URI tacked on 13 runs over the next two innings and added three more in the sixth before Derner's three-run shot made it 23-2 in the top of the eighth.

Sacred Heart's James Korevec was charged with the loss after giving up seven runs (all earned) in one complete inning of work. As a staff, the Pioneers issued 11 walks on the afternoon, compared to just one by the Rams.

Rhode Island returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when it travels to UConn for a 3 p.m. game against the Huskies.
