BRONX, N.Y. - Junior
Kyle Borden's ninth-inning homerun lifted the Rhode Island baseball team past Fordham, 8-7, in the series finale on Saturday afternoon at Houlihan Park. Both Borden and classmate
Tom Coulombe finished with three hits on the afternoon, helping URI rally back from an early 5-1 deficit.
The win improves URI to 11-13 (4-2) while Fordham drops to 8-18 (3-3).
Redshirt sophomore Dan Haverstick put Rhode Island on the board with a two-out homer in the top of the second, but Fordham came back and plated five in the bottom of the frame to go up 5-1.
RBI doubles by Coulombe and junior Kenny Burns - along with a run scoring single by Borden - got Rhody back within one (5-4) in the top of the third, but once again, Fordham came back and plated a pair in the bottom half of the inning to stretch its lead to 7-4.
Rhode Island tied things up at 7-7 in the top of the sixth as Haverstick, Burns and junior Kenny Burns each drove in a run for the Rams before Borden recorded what proved to be a game-winning homerun in the top of the ninth.
Senior Dan Rossignol picked up the win - his fourth of the season - after allowing just two hits over four innings of work. Junior Gardner Leaver retired both batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth to earn his third save. Fordham's John Flanagan was charged with the loss.
Rhode Island is back in action on Wednesday afternoon when it travels to Northeastern for a 3 p.m. meeting with the Huskies.
