Box Score
KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island senior
Tim Boyce pitched his second straight complete game shutout as the Rams downed visiting Richmond, 6-0, on Friday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
Boyce - who struck out a career-high 10 batters in the win - allowed just two singles and one walk over the nine-inning outing, picking up his fourth win of the season. He has now tossed a school-record 25 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to April 30. Former Ram Zach Zuercher previously held the top spot with 20 back in 2005.
As a team, Rhody combined for 12 hits on the day as sophomores Mike LeBel and Dan Haverstick, juniors Evan Laude and Tom Coulombe and senior Oliver Palmer finished with two each. Laude also drove in a pair of runs - as did junior Kyle Borden - while Palmer crossed the plate twice for the Rams.
Mike Mergenthaler and Billy Barber picked up the Spiders' only hits in the game.
The victory improves Rhode Island to 25-21 (14-8) while Richmond drops to 22-25 (8-14).
URI opened a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as LeBel led off with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on Palmer's sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI ground out by Borden.
Rhody added another in the fourth when Coulombe singled to center to drive in Palmer, who had stolen second after a leading off with a base hit.
A two-run double by Laude and a run-scoring single by Angulo - both of which came with two outs - put the Rams in front 5-0 in the sixth before sophomore Milan Adams scored URI's final run in the seventh, on another RBI ground out by Borden.
Richmond starter Ian Marshall also struck out 10 batters on the afternoon, but took the loss after giving up six runs (all earned) on 10 Rhode Island hits.
The two teams will return to Bill Beck Field on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
