Boyce Continues Dominance in 7-0 Win Over Colonials

May 20, 2010

Box Score

KINGSTON, R. I. - Rhode Island senior Tim Boyce threw his third straight complete game shutout as the Rhode Island baseball team defeated visiting George Washington, 7-0, on Thursday afternoon.

Boyce has now pitched 34 consecutive scoreless innings, marking the longest streak in NCAA Division I baseball - at any point in 2010. He also is the only pitcher in D-1 ball to have thrown back-to-back-to-back complete game shutouts this season.

Dating back to his April 30 outing at Duquesne, Boyce has held opponents to a .109 batting average, allowing a combined 12 hits to the 119 batters he has faced. Also during that span, he has recorded 29 strikeouts while issuing just four walks.

Against the Colonials, the Swansea, Mass. native tossed 7.2 innings of no-hit ball until Jon Chirumbolo singled up the middle with two away in the eighth inning. GW added two more base hits in the ninth but were unable to push a run across, thanks to Rhody's outstanding defensive showing.

Offensively, the Rams combined for 12 hits in the win - three of which came off the bat of senior Oliver Palmer. Junior Kyle Borden and redshirt sophomore Dan Haverstick added two apiece, as did senior Rob DeVeney, who sent a three-run homer to right in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Haverstick also picked up two RBI - on a two-run single in the fourth - while junior Evan Laude scored twice for Rhode Island.

With Rhode Island up 2-0 in seventh, Palmer led off with a triple to left center before scoring on a Borden's single to right. A sacrifice bunt by junior Tom Coulombe moved Borden to second, where junior Kenny Burns came in to pinch run. Burns then stole third before crossing the plate on senior Zoey Angulo's bunt single, putting Rhody up 4-0 before DeVeney's three-run blast.

With the victory, the Rams improve to 28-23 (16-9) while the Colonials drop to 25-27 (13-12).

The two teams return to Bill Beck field at 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Prior to the start of the game, the Rams will hold a brief ceremony to recognize the team's 2010 Rick Ligi MVP.
