Box Score | Rick Ligi MVP Award Presentation
KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island baseball team suffered a 10-7 setback to George Washington on Friday afternoon at Bill Beck Field. Prior to the start of the game, senior pitcher
Tim Boyce was presented with the
2010 Rick Ligi MVP Award.
The loss drops the Rams to 28-24 (16-10) while the Colonials improve to 26-27 (14-12).
George Washington jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first, but Rhody batted through the order in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs on six hits to move in front, 5-3.
A two-out solo homerun by Tom Zebroski got the Colonials within one in the top of the second before GW evened it up at 5-5 on Zebroski's RBI single in the sixth.
Rhody, meanwhile, struggled to keep the bats alive against GW reliever Joe Richardson who replaced starter Brian Derner in the first inning and did not allow the Rams a hit until the seventh.
George Washington had stretched it to 10-5 after a four-run eighth, but Rhode Island came back and cut it to 10-7 in the bottom of the frame after a pair of solo shots by juniors Kyle Borden and Evan Laude. However, that was as close as the Rams would get as they were unable to advance a runner beyond first base in their final trip to the plate.
URI and GW return to Bill Beck Field to close out the regular season at Noon on Saturday. Prior to the start of the game, the Rams will hold a brief ceremony to honor Rhody's five graduating seniors.
