ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The Rhode Island baseball team split a Sunday afternoon doubleheader with St. Bonaventure, winning the first game 14-11 before falling 7-3 in game two.
With the split, the Rams move to 24-21 (13-8) while the Bonnies go to 16-26 (7-14).
Juniors Tom Coulombe and Kyle Borden recorded four hits apiece on the afternoon while senior Zoey Angulo finished with three hits and five RBI. Coulombe also scored four runs while Borden crossed the plate three times.
Freshman Mike Bradstreet (3-1) picked up the win in game one, allowing just three hits over three and a third innings of scoreless relief. Junior Dan Johnson came on in the eighth and did not allow a hit the rest of the way en route to earning his second save of the season.
Senior Dan Rossignol took the loss in the second game allowing six runs (all earned) on eight hits. Sophomore Anthony Pisani, freshman Tyler Brennan and junior Brian Bodjiak combined to give up just one run on four hits over the final five innings of play.
The Bonnies jumped out to an early lead in game one, plating four runs in the bottom of the first but Rhody came back and cut the lead in half the following inning after Angulo's sac bunt scored Coulombe and junior Evan Laude crossed the plate on an RBI single by redshirt sophomore Dan Haverstick.
However, a pair of SBU runs in the bottom of the frame put the the home team back in front by four (6-2) until the Rams evened it up in the third. Laude started the rally with an infield single that plated Borden before Angulo reached on an error to score Coulombe - who had also reached on an error. Sophomore Milan Adams and junior Kenny Burns then drew back-to-back two-out walks to push Laude across before sophomore Mike LeBel singled to third to score Angulo and even things up at 6-6.
Borden and Coulombe both scored in the fourth to give the Rams their first lead of the game at 8-6, but the Bonnies came back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to go back on top 11-8.
Rhode Island, however, responded with a five-spot of its own in the top of the seventh as Adams led off with a single to right and eventually scored on a fielder's choice ball by senior Oliver Palmer. Borden then singled through the right side to plate redshirt sophomore Adam Derner before Coulombe walked to load the bases for Angulo.
Angulo put Rhody back in front as he laced a two-run single through the left side, moving Coulombe to third and sending both Borden and Palmer home for the 12-11 advantage. Coulombe then made it 13-11 when he scored on a balk by SBU's Cory Sudbrook.
The Rams tacked on one more in the top of the ninth as Angulo drove in Palmer for his fifth RBI of the game and the 14-11 victory.
Rhody got on the board first in game two - when LeBel scored on a passed ball in the opening inning - but St. Bonaventure plated four runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back. As a team, the Rams combined for just six hits while the Bonnies recorded 12. Both teams committed one error and left seven runners on base.
The Rams return to action at Bill Beck Field on Friday afternoon when they open up a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Richmond.
