PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Rhode Island volleyball
team (7-3) picked up its fourth straight win as it rallied from a
2-1 deficit to defeat Brown (3-0) at the Pizzitola Center Friday
night in the first day of the Brown Invitational.
Rhody's 7-3 start to the 2010 season is its best since 1999 when
the team opened the year 7-3. The Rams have also won their last
three five-game matches.
Junior Kayla
Wilson led the way for the Rams offensively as she hit .364 and
tallied 13 kills. Fellow teammates Britta Baarstad,
Lauren
McIntosh and Rachel Zarazan
also totaled double figures in kills with 13, 12 and 11
terminations, respectively.
Sophomore Annie Nelson also
chipped in offensively as she notched a match-high 48 assists and
hit .333.
Defensively for the Rams, sophomore Ashley Tennant led
the way with a match-high 22 digs.
Brown opened the match with a 25-15 win in game one. Rhody
fought back in the second set to even the match at one game apiece,
downing the Bears 25-22. In the second frame, the two teams had
seven ties and four lead changes.
The Bears re-claimed the lead in the third frame with a 25-16
win to take a 2-1 lead, but URI charged back to claim the final two
games 25-16 and 15-10, respectively.
Rhody returns to action tomorrow against Central Connecticut
(9:30 a.m.) and Holy Cross (5 p.m.).
