NEW BRITIAN, Conn. - Senior Caitrin Demchko won her first-ever collegiate event as the University of Rhode Island women's cross country team finished second overall (47 points) at the CCSU/Ted Owen Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Demchko clocked a time of 18:10.10 thanks to a sprint down the final stretch.
Northeastern claimed the team crown, finishing with 46 points.
"I'm very excited about the win for Caitrin," head women's cross country coach Laurie Feit-Melnick said. "As a team, it's a major improvement over last year at this time and I'm happy with the progression made from last week."
Along with Demchko's top finish, Rhody got strong performances from sophomore Niamh Ryan (18:31), senior Brittany Pelsue (18:32) and Jordan Westcott (18:49) who finished in fifth, sixth and 12th place, respectively.
Mary Najarian (23rd, 19:15), Cassie Olson (37th, 20:16) and Bridget Ryan (46th, 20:40) rounded out URI's finishers.
Rhode Island returns to action at the New England Championships on Oct. 9th. The race is set for noon in Boston.
