Rams Hold Off Charlotte

Setting the Scene
Rhode Island (11-9, 3-3 A-10) defeated Charlotte, 3-1, (25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22) Friday for its second road victory of the season. The match was played in front of 1,810 fans, a school record for the 49ers.

How It Happened
After a back-and-forth opening set, the Rams dominated the second set behind the offense of sophomore Britta Baarstad (3 kills, 1 ace) and the defense of classmate Jill Anderson (three block assists). Charlotte extended the match by edging Rhode Island in the third set, but the Rams squashed any hopes of a comeback.

Tied 22-22 in the fourth set, Rhode Island took the final three points to close out the win. After an attack error by the 49ers (6-12, 0-6 A-10) put the Rams up 23-22, a kill by Anderson and an ace from senior Kayla Wilson sealed the win.

Top Performances
Sophomore Britta Baarstad led Rhode Island with 17 kills in just 37 attacks. With only four hitting errors on the night, she finished with a strong .351 attack percentage. Baarstad added 10 digs for her third double-double of the season.

Also recording double-doubles were Kayla Wilson (13 kills, 20 digs) and junior setter Annie Nelson (36 assists, 11 digs). Wilson now has 308 kills this year, the first time she has topped 300 in one season during her career. She is now just 28 kills away from 1,000 for her career.

Freshman Kalyn Schieffer had a career-best 12 digs. She was one of four Rams with double-digit digs, joining Wilson, Nelson and senior Lindsay Potts (15).

What it Means
By improving to 3-3 in conference play, Rhode Island moved into a three-way tie Duquesne and George Washington with for fourth place in the A-10.

Stat of the Day
The Rams averaged 20.25 digs per set. This was well above their season average of 15 digs per set entering the match.

What's Next
The Rams get an off day Saturday before visiting George Washington Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.). Both teams are 3-3 in conference play, and are tied for fifth place in the A-10. The Colonials swept Fordham Friday night.
