Box Score

How It Happened
Rhode Island (10-10, 3-2 A-10) snapped a 20-match losing streak against Dayton, beating the Flyers in five sets Saturday night. The Rams won 14-25, 25-22, 27-25, 12-25, 19-17.

After Dayton (8-10, 2-4 A-10) breezed through the opening set, the Rams won the next two. In the third set, Rhody trailed 24-21 before scoring seven of the final eight points to close the set out.

The Flyers powered back to take the fourth set and even the match. However, Rhode Island built a 9-6 lead in the fifth set. The teams traded a few points before the Flyers scored back-to-back points to make it 12-11. The teams again traded points, before a kill by Layne Self gave the Rams match point at 14-12. Dayton stayed alive with a kill by Jill Loiars, and tied it on a block by Megan Campbell and Isolde Hannan.

Another kill from Self gave the Rams a third match point at 15-14, but Dayton again managed to stay alive with a Hannan kill. Self followed with yet another kill, but for the fourth time, the Flyers responded with a point of their own.

This time, Dayton set up its own match point at 17-16, but a Jill Anderson kill kept the Rams alive. Freshman Lena Vedder put the Rams up 18-17, and sophomore Franki Darnold closed out the win with a kill assisted by senior Britta Baarstad.

It was Rhode Island's first win over Dayton since a 3-1 victory on Sept. 28, 2001.
