Rams Open Strong, Falter Late at Duquesne

How It Happened
Rhode Island (10-11, 3-3 A-10) lost to Duquesne 3-1 Friday, falling to the Dukes for the second time this season. As was the case in the first meeting on Oct. 4, the Rams won the opening set, only to drop the next three.

Duquesne (11-8, 5-1 A-10) won the match 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21. The Dukes were led by Madelynn Burnham's 14 kills. She had just three errors in 34 attacks en route to an impressive .324 attack percentage.

This was Rhode Island's first road conference loss of the season.

Inside the Box Score

  • Senior Britta Baarstad had a match-high 21 digs, falling just one shy of her career best. Baarstad had 22 digs against Temple on Oct. 12, 2012.
  • Freshman Callan Kinnan had 48 assists and 12 digs to record her ninth career double-double. She and sophomore Franki Darnold are tied for the team lead in double-doubles.
  • Darnold just missed her 10th double-double of the year, finishing with 10 kills and nine digs.
  • Freshman Lena Vedder led the team with 14 kills and added three block assists.
  • Freshman Layne Self had seven kills, five block assists, one solo block and three digs.
 

Stat of the Day
3 – In all three of its losses in conference play, Rhode Island has won the opening set.

What's Next

Rhode Island stays on the road to take on Dayton Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. It will be the second meeting between the Rams and Flyers in eight days, as Rhody defeated Dayton 3-2 on Oct. 12.
