Rhode Island Falls to Duquesne, 3-1

How It Happened
Rhode Island (9-8, 2-1 A-10) took the opening set, but then dropped the next three as it fell to Duquesne 3-1 Friday night.

With 21-25, 25-19, and 28-26 defeats, the Rams saw their modest three-match winning streak snapped. Rhody also was looking to start 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 1999.

Rhode Island rallied from a 16-8 deficit in the fourth set and had a set point at 26-25, but Duquesne (8-8, 2-1 A-10) scored the final three points of the match to secure the win. The Dukes were led by Marah Farage and Madelynn Burnham, who combined for 28 kills.

Inside the Box Score

  • Sophmore Franki Darnold finished with a team-high 22 kills. She has reached double figures in nine of the last 10 matches. Darnold also topped 15 kills for the eighth time this season.
  • Junior Catie Steffen and freshman Layne Self also reached double digits in kills, finishing with 13 and 10, respectively. Self did not have any attack errors in 15 attempts.
  • Freshman Callan Kinnan topped 50 assists for the second straight match, and the fourth time in her career. She needs just 10 more assists to become the 20th player in school history to reach 600.
  • Kinnan, Cate Seman and Lizzy Scanlon each reach double digits in digs. Scanlon had a team-high 17, Seman had 14 and Kinnan had 11.

Stat of the night
33 – Rhode Island committed 33 attack errors on the night. It was the second most in a match this season, behind only the Sept. 20 match at Dartmouth, when the Rams had 38 errors.

Rhode Island stays home for a match against George Washington Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
