Rhode Island (9-9, 2-2 A-10) started fast out of the gate, but lost its second straight home conference match after it had won the opening set. The Rams fell to George Washington 18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 15- Sunday afternoon.
Down a set and trailing 19-13 in the fourth, Rhode Island scored eight consecutive points to go ahead 22-20. After the teams traded points, the Rams scored the final two points, finishing the set on a 12-2 run to force a deciding fifth set.
Despite the rally, it was all George Washington in the final set, as the Colonials (6-10, 1-1 A-10) jumped out to a 9-5 lead and held off the Rams from there.
In the opening set, Rhody jumped out to a 10-3 lead, using three blocks and a superb attack to create the early advantage. The Rams converted seven of its first nine attacks into kills, and then held off George Washington to take the set 25-18.
George Washington (5-10, 0-1 A-10) responded in the second set by taking seven of the first 10 points. After hitting a dismal -.179 as a team in the opening set, the Colonials had a .429 attack percentage in the second set.
The Colonials continued its strong play in the fourth set, taking it 25-23. George Washington limited Rhode Island to five kills as it took control of the match.
George Washington was led by Chidima Osuchukwu (13 kills, 6 blocks) and Landon Garvik (8 kills, 10 blocks).
Inside the Box Score
- Freshman Layne Self had a strong all-around match, finishing with 12 kills, three blocks and three service aces.
- Sophomore Franki Darnold had her team-leading eighth double-double. She finished with 15 kills, 11 digs and two service aces.
- Freshman Callan Kinnan finished the match with 46 assists. It was her seventh match of the season with at least 40 assists. During the first set, she became the 20th player in program history to reach 600 career assists.
- Junior Caroline Casey had seven kills to go with a career-high seven block assists.
- Freshman Lena Vedder provided a spark off the bench. Vedder finished with eight kills and two blocks over the final three sets.
Stat of the Day
11 – Rhode Island had a season-best 11 service aces. However, the Rams also committed 10 service errors.

Rhode Island's home stand continues when it hosts Northeastern in non-conference action Wednesday, Oct. 9. The match begins at 7 p.m. The Rams are hosting Club and Intramural Sports Night.
