Rams Drop Third Straight, Fall 3-1 to Northeastern

How It Happened
Rhode Island (9-10) lost its third straight home match, falling in four sets to Northeastern in non-conference action Wednesday. The 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-15 defeat marked the third consecutive match the Rams won the opening set only to fall.

Up 21-20 in the opening set, Rhode Island took command by scoring three consecutive points. A Britta Baarstad kill followed by back-to-back blocks by Layne Self and Lena Vedder put the Rams up 24-20. Northeastern scored the next two points, but Vedder closed out the set with a kill.

Northeastern (11-7) won the next two sets and took control of the fourth set quickly by scoring six of the first seven points. Rhode Island did not have an answer for the trio of Kelly Bacon, Janelle Tucker and Caterina Rosander, who combined for 36 kills with just six errors.
 
Inside the Box Score

  • Senior captain Jill Anderson returned to the lineup after missing 15 matches with an injury. Anderson finished with four kills and one dig.
  • Freshman Lena Vedder tied her career high with eight kills. It was the third time this season and second match in a row she has reached the figure.
  • Freshman Callan Kinnan recorded her seventh career double-double, finishing with 33 assists and 10 digs. She added five kills.
  • Senior Britta Baarstad had a season-best 17 digs to go with seven kills.
  • Freshman Layne Self had six kills and six block assists on the night.  
  • Rhode Island was without its second leading scorer, as junior Catie Steffen missed the match with an injury.

Stat of the Day
15 – Northeastern caused problems for the Rhody attack with 15 blocks. Caterina Rosander led the Huskies with two solo blocks and seven assists.

What's Next
Rhode Island returns to Atlantic 10 action Saturday when it hosts Dayton (7 p.m.). The Flyers are the four-time defending conference champions. Dayton plays at Fordham Friday night.
