Rams Fall to Valparaiso and Army at Valpo Popcorn Classic

How it Happened
Rhode Island (2-4) was swept twice on Saturday at the Valpo Popcorn Classic. Rhody first fell to the host Crusaders (25-23, 25-19, 25-23) before dropping a 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 decision to Army.

Inside the Box Score

  • Sophomore Franki Darnold double-doubled against Valparaiso, matching her career-high with 14 digs and adding a team-high 12 kills. She went on to add eight of each against Army, finishing the day with a team-leading 22 digs and 20 kills.
  • Freshman Callan Kinnan combined for 56 assists over the two matches, while also adding 15 digs and five blocks. She was the lone Ram named to the All-Tournament team.
  • Freshman Layne Self chipped in with 11 blocks over the two matches. She led all players with six against Valparaiso and was second among her teammates with nine kills against the Crusaders.

Stat of the Day
Through six matches so far this season, Rhode Island is led by a freshman in total assists (Callan Kinnan - 169) and total blocks (Layne Self - 20) while a sophomore paces the team in total kills (Franki Darnold - 64) and total digs (Lizzy Scanlon - 63)

The Rams return to Kingston for the fourth annual Art Carmichael Invitational, Sept. 13-14. Rhody will face UMass Lowell and UTEP on Friday before closing out competition against Hartford on Saturday.
