Rams Blanked by Drexel, Lose in Extra Innings at UMBC

How it Happened
Rhode Island (3-12) dropped a pair of games at the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational Friday, getting blanked 4-0 by Drexel before falling 2-1 to UMBC in eight innings.

In the first game, Drexel (5-9) scored single runs in each of the first two innings, then a pair of runs in the third as it steadily built its lead. Pitcher Shelby Taylor (4-3) allowed just three hits, all singles, en route to the complete-game shutout. Taylor also had two hits, one walk, one run scored and one run batted in on offense.

The second game was a heartbreaker, as Rhode Island took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The lead held until UMBC (16-5) tied it with an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. The Retrievers then earned the walk-off win when Jaclyn Buckley delivered a two-out, run scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Despite taking the loss against UMBC, Senior Sam Bedore pitched very well. In 3.2 innings of work, Bedore allowed three hits and one run while striking out five. In her last four appearances, Bedore has pitched 13.2 innings, allowing just two earned runs on 13 hits to go with 15 strikeouts and eight walks.
  • By pitching in both games Friday, Bedore appeared in her 100th career game in the UMBC contest. She is now tied with Lee-Anne Stanovich and Sue Foggo for fifth place in school history in pitching appearances.
  • Sophomore Taylor Archer singled in both games and had an RBI against UMBC. Archer is now on a five-game hitting streak during which she is batting .500 (6-for-12) with two RBI and one run scored.
  • Freshman Danielle Gariglio singled and scored the first run of the game against UMBC.
  • Sophomore Emily Hendricks singled against UMBC and has hit safely in four of her last five games. She is batting .308 (4-for-13) over the stretch.
  • Senior Jocelyn Mattison reached base safely four times on the day, getting one single, two walks and getting hit by a pitch for the 13th time in her career. She is tied for fifth in school history in the category.
  • Rhode Island has had the same starting defense for five consecutive games. Over that stretch, the team had just three errors and a fielding percentage of .980.
  • Over the first 10 games, the Rams made 13 errors and had a team fielding percentage of .948.


Stat of the Day
1 – The run scored by Danielle Gariglio in the first inning against UMBC was the first by Rhode Island in the first inning of any game this season.

What's Next

The Rams close out spring break with two more games Saturday, March 15 at the UMBC Dawg Pound. Rhody plays Hampton at 9:30 a.m. and Niagara at 11:30 a.m.
