Box Score 2 How it Happened
Five seniors playing in the final games made significant contributions as Rhode Island (13-32-1, 6-11-1 Atlantic 10) ended its season with a 6-2 win over George Wasington Saturday. The visiting Colonials (18-31-1, 4-12) won the first game of the doubleheader 7-6 in a thriller.
In her first start of the season, Cassie Baker (1-1) pitched five innings to earn the victory, limiting George Washington to two runs on one hit. Sam Bedore pitched the final two innings to earn her third save of the season, tying the school record set by Kathy Regan in 1994.
On the offensive side, seniors Stacey Fox, Amy Gleason and Jocelyn Mattison combined for three hits, one walk, one run scored, four runs batted in. All three had at least one RBI, with Gleason delivering a two-run double for the Rams' lone extra base hit of the game.
The first game of the day was a back-and-fourth contest that ended with Rhody having the winning run in scoring position. After George Washington scored twice in the top of the first, Rhode Island put together a five-run third highlighted by Lauren Klepchick's three-run home run.
The Colonials responded with two in the top of the fourth and three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Rhody has a rally going, but Fox was called out on a questionable play at the plate to thwart that threat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Gleason drilled a single by the third baseman to start the inning, and with one out, Emily Hendricks reached on an error. Pinch hitter Deanna Wolf then launched a ball to left center that just missed getting out of the park for a walk-off home run. Instead, the ball hit the base of the wall, and because the runners had to hold to see if it would be caught, each advanced one base. Fox drove in Gleason with a ground out to make it a one-run game. Rhody still had runners on second and third with two outs, but a groundout ended the comeback attempt.
