Rams Sweep In-State Rival Brown

How It Happened
Rhode Island rallied from a seven-point deficit in the third set en route to a 3-0 (25-22, 32-30, 25-22) sweep of in-state rival Brown Wednesday night.

Rhode Island (13-6) cruised in the opening set, winning 25-20. The second set was a marathon in which both sides has multiple set points. Eventually the Rams got a kill from Franki Darnold followed by an attack error by Brown's Payton Smith to take a 2-0 set lead.

Brown (8-9) threatened to extend the match by jumping out to a 14-7 lead in the third set. However, Rhody ran off six straight points to pull within a point. A kill by Marie Gillcrist gave the Rams their first lead of the set at 20-19. The Bears came back to tie the set 22-22, but back-to-back Brown errors and a kill from Callan Kinnan clinched the victory for Rhode Island.

Inside the Box Scores

  • Senior Franki Darnold had 14 kills to lead the Rhode Island attack. Darnold also became the third player in program history to reach 1,200 career kills, finishing the night with 1,206.
  • Rhode Island's middles had a strong match. Junior Layne Self and sophomore Marie Gillcrist combined for 17 kills with just three attack errors. Self had 10 kills and five block assists, while Gillcrist had seven kills with two blocks.
  • Junior setter Callan Kinnan had 38 kills, nine digs and three kills. 
  • Junior Audrey Castro added nine kills and 15 digs. 
  • Freshman Olivia Budinich had 10 digs, the third time in four matches she has reached double digits.
  • Senior Lizzy Scanlon played in the 100th match of her career. She had five digs and a pair of assists. Scanlon needs 17 digs to become the ninth player in Rhode Island history to reach 1,000 for her career.

Stat of the Day 
62 – The second set featured 62 points, with Rhode Island winning it 32-30. It was the second longest set the Rams have played this season, behind only the 34-32 second set Rhody won against Columbia on Sept. 19.

Rhode Island returns to conference play when it hosts Fordham Saturday at 5 p.m.
