Volleyball Outlasts George Washington, 3-2

How It Happened
Rhode Island (15-6, 5-3 A-10) opened the match winning the first set, 25-23, in a back-and-forth stanza with the Colonials (16-7, 5-3 A-10). The Rams trailed late in the opening set, 23-20, before going on a 5-0 run to win the set, capped off by junior Callan Kinnan's service ace.

The Rams kept their momentum and captured the second set, needing extra points to do so, 27-25. The set was another close battle as there were 17 ties and no team led by more than three at any time. Cate Seman led the attack with four kills in the set.

George Washington held a 17-10 lead in the third set and was able to hold the Rams at bay to avoid the sweep and win the set, 25-19. The Colonials proceeded to win the fourth set by the same score (25-19) to tie the match, 2-2, and force a deciding fifth set.

In the deciding set, the score was tied 7-7 before URI went on a 7-2 run to gain a 14-9 lead. GW scored the next five points to tie the set at 14, forcing extra points. Rhody closed out the set and match with a kill by sophomore Marie Gillcrist and the forcing of an attack error on GW for the clinching score. (16-14)

Inside the Box Score 

  • Junior Layne Self recorded 12 kills with a team-best .450 hitting percentage.
  • Kinnan recorded a double-double with 56 assists and 16 digs.
  • Defensively, Rhody was led by Audrey Castro who tallied a team-best 19 digs.
  • OliviaBudinich was the third Ram to reach double digit digs with 12.
  • Senior Franki Darnold registered a team-best 17 kills.
  • Castro and Seman also reached double digits for kills with 15 and 10, respectively.
  • Senior Lizzy Scanlon registered six digs. She now needs just four more to become the ninth player in program history to reach 1,000 for her career.
  • For the match, there were 39 ties and 18 lead changes.

What's Next
The Rams will return to action tomorrow (Oct. 24) at George Mason (8-14, 3-5 A-10) for a 7:00 p.m. match.
