Rams Rally to Knock Off Saint Louis in Five Sets

How It Happened
For the second straight night, Rhode Island found itself in a five-set match against one of the top teams in the conference. This time, the Rams rallied to win the final two sets and defeat second-place Saint Louis 3-2 (24-26, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18, 15-8).

With Callan Kinnan distributing the ball to the trio of Franki Darnold, Audrey Castro and Layne Self, the Rams (17-7, 7-4 A-10) powered their way to a big win over Saint Louis (19-8, 8-3 A-10). With the win, Rhode Island improved to 4-3 in five-set matches this season.

Darnold, Castro and Self combined for 53 kills, helping the Rams to a .318 hitting percentage as a team. Kinnan's 50th assist of the night came on a kill by Darnold that ended the match.

Inside the Box Scores

  • Before the match, seniors Franki Darnold, Lizzy Scanlon and Cate Seman were honored as they played their final home match for Rhode Island.
  • Junior setter Callan Kinnan had 50 assists, giving her 1,032 for the season. It was the eighth time this season she had had at least 50 assists in a match. 
  • With three service aces, Kinnan now has 95 for her career. She needs five more to become the 15th Ram to reach 100.
  • Senior Franki Darnold had her second double-double of the weekend, posting 23 kills and 14 digs.
  • It was the sixth time this season Darnold has had at least 20 kills in a match this season.
  • Junior Audrey Castro had 19 kills, nine digs and two blocks.
  • Senior Lizzy Scanlon had eight assists and now has 1,013 for her career. She is in eighth place in program history and needs one more to tie Angela McHenry (1,014 from 1995-98) for seventh place.
  • Junior Layne Self was strong in the middle with 11 kills and no errors in 21 attacks, giving her a .524 hitting percentage. 
  • Self also had nine blocks, including three that came in Rhode Island's final four points of the night. It is the third time in her career Self has had nine blocks in one match.
  • Senior Cate Seman had six kills, eight digs and six blocks.

Stat of the Day
1032 – Junior Callan Kinnan went over 1,000 assists for the season and now has 1,032. She is just the second player in program history to have 1,000-or-more assists in three different seasons, joining Jessica Salmans, who did it four times (1995-98).

What's Next
Rhode Island is off for a full week before visiting Fordham to start a three-match road swing to close out the regular season. Rhody and Fordham play Saturday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m.
