Rhody Defeats Fordham, 3-1

How It Happened
Rhode Island defeated Fordham for the second time this season, this time picking up a 3-1 win Saturday night in the Bronx. 

Rhody and Fordham split the first two sets, with each being decided by the minimum two points. URI captured the first 28-26 before Fordham evened the match with a 25-23 win in the second set. 

Rhode Island returned from the break and never trailed in the third set, en route to a 25-21 win.

The Rams rode the momentum into the fourth, where five straight Rhody kills - three of which came from Cate Seman - gave URI an early 7-2 advantage. Another kill by Seman later gave Rhode Island a 10-point lead at 18-8 and the Rams limited Fordham to just five more points the rest of the way.

Inside the Box Score

  • Overall, the match featured 23 ties and 11 lead changes - the majority of which came in the first two sets. After the break, Fordham led just twice - at 1-0 and 2-1 in the fourth set.
  • The Rhode Island defense held a 69-55 advantage in digs and an 11-5 edge in blocks while limiting Fordham to a .127 hitting percentage for the night.
  • Sophomore Marie Gillcrist led all players with seven blocks while four Rams had double-digit digs: senior Lizzy Scanlon (16), senior Franki Darnold (13), junior Callan Kinnan (12) and junior Audrey Castro (13).
  • Darnold also recorded a game-high 18 kills for her ninth double-double of the season.
  • Castro double-doubled as well, finishing with 11 kills and 11 digs.
  • Seman ended the night with 12 kills, nine digs, three blocks, two assists and a service ace.
  • In addition to her 12 digs, Kinnan added 41 assists, four kills and three blocks.

Stats of the Game

  • 19 - Lizzy Scanlon's 19 digs moved her into seventh place on Rhode Island's all-time list. With 1,029 for her career, she passed Angela McHenry (1, 014) to take over the #7 spot.
  • 3 - With three blocks on the night, Layne Self climbed to sixth all-time at URI. The junior middle - who now has 359 for her career - passed Michelle Fulton (358).

What's Next
The Rams close out the regular season next weekend with a pair of matches at Davidson (Friday) and VCU (Saturday).
