How it Happened

Five Rhode Island pitchers combined for a shutout as the Rams edged Quinnipiac 1-0 on a frigid day in Kingston, R.I. The victory was the fourth in five games for the Rams (4-6), who have now won three in a row.

With offense hard to come by as "feels like" temperatures dipped into the teens, Rhody got outstanding work from its staff as Blaise Whitman, Brad Applin, Dom Grillo, Dan Jacobson and Taso Stathopoulos combined on the team's second shutout of the year.

Rhody got on the board first when Mike Corin drove in Tim Caputo with a single to left field. Caputo led the inning off with a walk and moved to third base when Derek Gardella singled through the right side on a hit-and-run play. Corin followed with his RBI single, and a bunt single by Mike Sherburne loaded the bases with one out. However, a strikeout and pop out ended the threat.

Both teams threatened but came up empty in the fourth inning. In the top half, Quinnipiac (2-12) managed to load the bases with two outs, but Brad Applin battled back to strike out Anthony Cruz. After falling behind in the count 3-0, Applin got Cruz to swing and miss to end the inning.

In the home half, Nick DeRegis led off with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball and then stole third. Chase Livingston lifted a fly ball to left field, but DeRegis was thrown out trying to tag and score on the play.

Despite the low-scoring affair, both teams had their chances. Rhode Island left 11 runners on base, while Quinnipiac stranded seven and was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
