How it Happened
Rhode Island (5-8, 1-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning and never looked back. Tim Caputo got things started with a single through the right side that scored Connor Foreman before Mike Corin ripped his second three-run shot of the series to put the Rams ahead 4-0.

Colton Frabasilio then put the Billikens (15-8, 2-1) on the board in the bottom of the fourth, recording SLU's first hit on the afternoon on an opposite-field shot that made it a 4-1 game.

Rhody got the run back in the top of the fifth however, and extended its lead to 8-1 in the sixth, thanks to an RBI double by Foreman and a two-run single by Jordan Powell.

Powell struck again in the eighth, singling through the left side to score DeRegis, who had reached via hit by pitch.

With starter Tyler Wilson out of the game, Saint Louis rallied in the bottom of eighth - scoring twice off reliever Derek Kawlewski - before adding three more (all unearned) off of Taso Stathopoulos in the bottom of the ninth.

Inside the Box Score

  • Freshman Tyler Wilson earned his second win in a row, allowing just one run on three hits over seven innings of work. Entering the weekend, Wilson had ranked third in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings (3.14). He now leads the team with 19 strikeouts and is tops among Rhody's starters with a .113 opposing average.
  • Zach Girrens (3-1) took the loss for Saint Louis - his first of the season - as he was responsible for Rhody's first eight runs of the game.
  • Offensively, freshman Jordan Powell went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run scored and a stolen base. He is just the second Ram this season to put together a three-hit game. Tim Caputo had the other, in URI's series finale at No. 2 Florida.
  • Redshirt sophomore Mike Corin also drove in three runs in the win over Saint Louis, all of which came on his team-leading third home run of the season.
  • Senior Tim Caputo was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, two runs scored and an RBI. He has now reached base in each of Rhody's last 12 games.
  • Redshirt junior Derek Gardella extended his reached base streak to double digits as well, reaching on an error in the fifth and drawing a sixth-inning walk to get on base for his 10th game in a row.
  • Senior Nick DeRegis and junior Connor Foreman each scored twice for the Rams. Foreman also hit his first double of the season while DeRegis went 1-for-3 to move into a tie (with Corin) for the team lead in hits, with 13.
  • Overall, eight of Rhody's nine hitters had a hit as redshirt freshman Chris Hess singled and walked and sophomore Martin Taveras doubled and was hit by a pitch.

Rhody returns to Kingston to host Sacred Heart in a pair of doubleheaders next weekend. The Rams and Pioneers will play at noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
