How it Happened
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Rhode Island (5-9) evened things up at three apiece when Chris Hess drew a two-out, bases loaded walk to push across Jordan Powell, who had singled through the left side to lead off the inning. Nick DeRegis followed with a two-run laser up the middle to plate Mike Corin and Mike Foley and give the Rams their first lead of the day at 5-3.

Sacred Heart (2-14) rallied back in the top of the ninth however, taking advantage of a costly Rhode Island error and plating five runs on four hits.

Ryan Olmo doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth and later scored on a bases-loaded sac-fly by Martin Taveras but URI's late comeback bid fell short as Chase Livingston grounded into a bases-loaded, 6-4-3 double play to end the game with SHU on top 8-6.

Inside the Box Score

  • Senior Nick DeRegis accounted for four of Rhody's six runs in the loss. He finished the day 2-for-4 with a solo home run and three RBI. He also recorded his second outfield assist of the season in left field.
  • Freshman Jordan Powell, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, continued his hot streak with a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He also had a stolen base and one run scored.
  • Junior Ryan Olmo was a perfect 2-for-2 after entering the game as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning. He singled in his first at-bat, doubled in his second and scored Rhody's final run of the game in the bottom of the ninth.
  • Olmo has now reached base successfully in each of his last three pinch-hit at-bats. His seventh-inning base hit was URI's first from a pinch hitter this season.
  • Eleven of Rhody's 12 hitters got on base at least once in the game while all nine of the Pioneers reached at least one time.
  • Sacred Heart's Jason Sullivan went 3-for-5 on the day. He was the lone SHU player with multiple hits.
  • Freshman Dan Jacobson was the tough-luck loser for the Rams, tossing a 1-2-3 eighth before putting three men on in the top of the ninth. Overall, he was charged with three runs (two earned) on two hits over an inning and a third.
  • Sophomore Taso Stathopoulos was then charged with two runs (both unearned) on two singles and walk in an error-extended relief appearance for Jacobson.
  • Junior Steve Moyers tossed seven innings in a no-decision start for the Rams. He allowed three runs on five hits with four walks and two hit batsmen.
  • Dan Wertz picked up the win for the Pioneers, recording the final out in the eighth before SHU pulled ahead in the ninth.
  • James Cooksey earned the save, facing two batters in the ninth and getting a fly-out and a game-ending double play.
  • All nine innings of the game were played with snow falling down. Due to the wintry conditions, the second game of the doubleheader was cancelled.
